Before coming to AHS, Theresa’s life was spiraling out of control, and she spent her early teenage years in and out of jail. She was able to get her life on track after coming to AHS, and she graduated in June 2012. She plans to start community college in the fall and hopes to transfer to a university afterwards to pursue a career as a beautician. Here is an excerpt from her graduation speech:

“Looking back, I know that I couldn’t get to this stage on my own. I want to give a special thank you to all of my teachers and staff. You made my stay better because you always listened to what I had to say and never judged me once. I want to thank you for being with me every step of the way throughout my senior year and helping me realize that college isn’t so daunting. Thank you for always fighting for me and for what I believe in and for always being understanding.”

Aviva High School Students Will...

“We’re taking back our futures.” That’s how the girls at Aviva High School describe how their lives have changed. Many of our students first arrive with negative feelings about school, with histories of multiple failures, suspensions and expulsions. However, after a few months of working in classrooms with a 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio, they start to imagine the coming years with specific plans and goals. They start dreaming not only of graduating but continuing their education beyond high school. And they know Aviva will be beside them and their families at every step.

Our students tell stories of being let down, frustrated and bounced around larger schools before they came to Aviva. They describe Aviva High School as having close-knit classes, teachers who understand their individual needs and teach without judgment, and counselors who are available down the hall when feelings get tough.

It’s about finally going to a school where students realize the value of their skills, discover their innate ability to help others, and learn how to be responsible for their choices and actions. In short, Aviva High School is a unique and safe place where girls can grow, strive and dream more than they dared to before.

Giving Hope its Second Wind

In California, less than half of all foster youth graduate from high school and even fewer attend higher education.

Aviva High School helps at-risk teenage girls get their lives back on track, graduate high school, and go on to post-secondary education. 95% of our graduates go on to vocational schools, community colleges, and/or universities.

Watch firsthand accounts of this transformational impact, and we encourage you to share with your friends and family.
